The Clumber Spaniel

The Clumber Spaniel is a breed developed in the United Kingdom. It is the largest of the spaniels and comes in predominantly white with either lemon or orange markings. The name of the breed is taken from Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire where the breed was first developed. It is a gundog that specialises in hunting in heavy cover.

They are gentle and loyal and can act aloof with strangers. They have several habits which could be considered disadvantages, including a constant shedding of its coat and snoring.

Balanced, well boned, active with a thoughtful expression, overall appearance denoting strength. The Clumber Spaniel should be firm, fit and capable of a days work of beating in heavy cover. Stoical, great hearted, highly intelligent with a determined attitude enhancing his natural ability, he is a silent worker with an excellent nose.

A wonderful breed with truly amazing hunting ability and a remarkably keen nose. Their strong and substantial build and density of coat have great purpose to enable the ability to work in the dense thick underbrush.

A Clumbers coat is abundant, close, silky and straight. Legs and chest well feathered. They are plain white body preferred, with lemon markings; orange permissible. Slight head markings and freckled muzzle.

The head is distinctive been large and square with the hallmark heavy brow that provides protection from the thick cover in where they worked. Bathing should start at the face and head. Its important to correctly bath the head and face to both correctly cleanse and provide eye protection. Bath this area using Plush Puppy Let’s Face It. This fragrant-free hypoallergenic, Sulfate-free low foaming face shampoo is perfect for all breeds of dog. Our gentle no tear formula will not sting or irritate the eyes. Formulated with natural ingredients including Blue Cypress extracts with anti-inflammatory benefits are particularly effective on this head type. Plus Panthenol, Pro-Vitamin B5 to add moisture, aid healing and offer anti-inflammatory benefits.

Let’s Face It facial shampoo is particularly effective on around the eyes, stop and lip folds which can get sore. Can also be used as a gentle ear cleaner. Use before a complete body shampoo. Pump a golf ball sized amount into the hands, then apply to the dogs face. Gently massage until it lathers and leave in to protect the eyes while you shampoo the main body then rinse all out.

Now a Clumber loves been a true Gundog and the appeal of dirt and water are just Clumber heaven. Add that with their dense abundant white coat they can require that added deep cleaning shampoo to get through the grime. For those times first bath using Plush Puppy Deep Cleansing Shampoo which is a clarifying shampoo designed to remove grease, grime and any product build-up in a dogs coat. By clarifying we mean cutting through ANY impurities to leave the coat in an ultra-clean natural state.

This shampoo has extra surfactants that open the cuticle deeper to allow the deep cleaning and clarifying process. It will provide the deepest coat clean available leaving the coat reset and refreshed. Not only will it spruce up dull whites, but it can also be used on any colour coat for a thorough and intensive clean.

Deep Cleansing Shampoo will assist in reducing unwanted coat stains. It is a rich formulation infused with Green Tea and Seaweed extracts. Green Tea is full of nutrients, antioxidants, and phytochemicals and Panthenol (Vitamin B). It helps strengthen the coat and retain moisture. Seaweed extract provides detoxification, which leaves the coat in a healthier state. Use at 1:5 dilution rate (1 part shampoo to 5 parts water). Lather well where needed (legs, around the neck and ears generally) and rinse.

To address the base colour of white and to leave the coat brighter and reduce staining use Herbal Whitening Shampoo with Ginseng which is primarily derived from organic sources with Ginseng extracts, protein, and a violet tone combined in a rich formula that works brilliantly to whiten whites and intensify darker colours.

It DOES NOT lighten or bleach but instead tones with optical brighteners. It reduces yellowing or warm tones in white coats or white areas of the coat and will negate unwanted tones from sun fading or reddening in the coat. For darker colours it will reduce any warm tones to intensify the depth of colour by revitalising any lost cool tones. This is a very useful shampoo to get that dark steely blue to blue areas of a coat, and golden tan to tan colourings.

Use at 1:5 (1 part shampoo to 5 parts water) for an intensive clean or 1:10 for a general clean. Wet coat thoroughly, apply to the whole dog or specific areas that require cleaning, toning or brightening. Lather then rinse thoroughly.

Clumbers can stain, whether from drool, digging or just being a grot. For these time use Plush Puppy Wonder Blok. It helps to maintain a white stain free coat. It is not a bleach and contains no harmful chemicals but high amounts of naturally sourced vegetable surfactants and glycerin. This product is designed to remove gently unwanted warm or red tones in the coat.

Best used on a damp or wet coat. Gently rub into the areas required allowing time (5-10 minutes) and rinse. For maximum effects repeat or allow a longer time for this amazing product to work. A Plush Puppy tip – place the Plush Puppy Wonder Blok in some warm water for 5 mins, this softens the bar and allows for easier application through the coat. When possible, apply the day before show bathing (soak overnight and then wash – or at least apply in the morning and allow to soak as long as possible for maximum effects. As with all products take care around eyes.

When it comes to conditioning the Clumber use Plush Puppy Silk Protein Conditioner. Apply a light squish through the longer parts of the coat with a well-diluted mix of up to 1:10 (1 part conditioner to 10 parts water). This will serve to keep featherings untangled and hydrated. Use the conditioner mix at 1:20 on the shorter body coat for shine but this higher dilution will reduce the risk making the coat fluffy.

If you feel the coat is dehydrated in areas use Plush Puppy Reviva Coat. This is a unique hydrating leave-in foam. Apply a couple of golf ball amounts to the area and massage in. It hydrates by does not change the texture or fluff up the coat. Plush Puppy Reviva Coat is excellent for mid-week protection of pee feathers on boys and even girls. Lightly clean the area using Plush Puppy Wonder Wash, our no rinse shampoo, towel dry and apply Puppy Reviva Coat and leave in. This product hydrates, protects and closes the cuticle to vastly reduce staining and breakage.

The Clumber can at times drop coat (hormones and seasonal). At these times you have 2 options.

Option 1 is Plush Puppy Natural Body Building Shampoo which helps boost coats wanting or needing a fuller and thicker appearance! The absolute answer in dog shampoo for volume, this shampoo does have enormous lift and a bodifying effect to the coat without an artificial feel.

It is also beneficial to the coat as it is primarily naturally derived and infused with beneficial plant extracts. Body Building Shampoo is bolstered by Wheat Protein and Wheat Starch with D-Panthenol and Lichen extract. It will give the appearance of a naturally thicker and fuller coat and can be used on the whole dog or just in areas requiring extra lift or body. Perfect for a Clumber to give the appearance of a thicker and denser coat plus it achieves the appearance of more bone as out of coat dogs usually always appear finer in bone. Use at a ratio of 1:5 (1 part shampoo to 5 parts water) massage until it lathers, then rinse thoroughly.

You can use this in combination with Herbal Whitening Shampoo to achieve both results of bodifying plus toning at the same time. Brilliant!

Option 2 is to apply Plush Puppy Volumising Cream at a ratio of 1 tablespoon to 1 cup water and spray well onto the featherings or sponge in liberally. Or use Plush Puppy Volumising Spray which is a ‘Ready to Use’ spray for quick and easy fuller coat results. Perfect either before blow-drying or used to ‘fluff’ up the coat at the show. A light even spray, brush in until dry or use a dryer. This is a hair thickener to add volume, not a hair stiffener and not easily detectable as it leaves the coat with a natural fuller look and feel. Just perfect for ears and anywhere requiring a bit more lift.

Use a cushioned oval Plush Puppy Ultimate Pin Brush, for grooming and when drying. Dry till ¾ dry as this won’t stretch the featherings then switch to the Plush Puppy Ultimate Anti-Static Porcupine Brush. This is an oval cushioned half bristle, half dialon brush to finish smoothing the featherings. I use the two brushes as it is detrimental to the coat to not overly stretch hair when wet hence the use of the Pin brush first till almost dry.

Finish with a Plush Puppy Professional Grooming Comb. The lightweight oval shaped spine combining fine and coarse pins will reduce drag and static to the coat. Perfect for use for this breed of dog.

For Show days make sure you pack the Plush Puppy Wonder Wash for the feet and legs if they got dirty or dusty. This which is a no rinse wet instant shampoo for last-minute emergencies that will clean up anything, pronto. Just spray and foam in with the fingers and towel off.

For a whiter finish to the legs or stained areas you can use makeup on your dog. Plush Puppy makes a terrific product for white areas called Plush Puppy Coverup Cream. This is a white paste that is applied with a damp sponge. Just dab onto the area that needs to be covered such as an unevenly pigmented muzzle area. Then add some Plush Puppy Fairy Frost Powder, an ultra-white powder that clings all day.

At times due to various reasons including the weather static electricity can create flyaways. If this occurs use Plush Puppy Anti-Static Coat Control. This is a lightweight spray infused with organic extracts of Witch Hazel Leaf, Linden Flower, Birch Bark and Nettle. It also adds to the protection, include a UV filter to stop sun damage and protect against heat strength for the perfect finished look of the coat. This amazing product is idea for this breed and a must for your tack box.

All senses come into play when judging and a good smelling dog is nice to touch. Plush Puppy Odour Muncher is sensational in that it kills the odour and leaves a pleasant scent behind.

For the final flourish, spray with Plush Puppy Shine and Comb, a magical shine spray that is non greasy and water soluble. A light burst onto the coat or onto your hands and smoothed over the top and flanks works like a charm. Try spraying just one side first and see the difference. It’s amazing. Your dog especially will just glisten with glowing good health.

A well prepared a Clumber Spaniel correctly they are a striking breed. There outline and stylish rich red and white colouring captures the eye of many a judge. Your efforts in maintain the coat and preparation can put a smile on the judges face amongst the many Gundog breeds.
