Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier has been around for over a hundred years, but the breed has only been officially recognised recently when Australia recognised the breed in 1991. The breed takes its name from one of England’s hunting parsons, the Reverend John (or Jack, as he was known locally) Russell from Devon, who established the breed in the early 19th century. Being a keen fox hunter, the Reverend needed an agile dog with plenty of spirit that could keep up with hounds and have the courage to face up to its quarry underground. When not pursuing foxes, Jack Russell’s were used as exterminators of vermin, such as badgers and rats.

The Jack Russell Terrier

This breed has 3 distinct coat types: Ruff, Broken, and Smooth. All coat types are predominately white-based colour with black and/or tan markings.

The “Ruff” is a true terrier-type coat with a harsh texture guard hair that’s weatherproof with softer undercoat. This coat type includes a facial beard, brows, and leg furnishings. This is a hand-stripped coat.

The “Broken” is a terrier-type coat of weatherproof harsh texture and the same softer undercoat. However, the degree of the facial beard, brow, and leg furnishing is significantly reduced or sparse. This coat is also hand stripped/tidied but to a lesser degree.

The “Smooth” is a double coat with the outer guard coat is crisp due to a tight weatherproof shorter coat (not harsh like a ruff) with a tight soft undercoat.

With ruff and broken coat type use on the face, beard and brows, Plush Puppy Let’s Face It Shampoo Another one of the famous Plush Puppy products that with the latest technology and the highest amounts of naturally sourced ingredients has developed into a product that is a must! This is a hypoallergenic sulfate-free low foaming shampoo designed for faces. It is a nil fragrance, no tear formula with the highest quality Blue Cypress Extracts, Panthenol with Pro-Vitamin B and SugaNate. These special ingredients clean, soothe, add moisture, aids healing, and has anti-inflammatory benefits. A small golf ball-sized amounts directly to the face and eye area allows you to thoroughly clean without causing irritation. Can be used in and around ears also with the same benefits. Its low foaming design allows easy rinsing yet complete cleaning. Can be used on smooths too.

When preparing any of the coat types it’s important to consider 2 important things. 1. the predominantly white base colour and 2. Coat texture.

All coat types should use Plush Puppy Herbal Whitening Shampoo to tone the white base colour. Use at 1 part shampoo to between 5 up to 10 parts water. The less dilution (1:5) the stronger the whitening effect. Dilute in a mixing bottle and apply to a wet coat. Lather and then rinse. This reduces the warm/red/yellow tones.

For those extra dirty coats use  Plush Puppy Deep Cleansing Shampoo first shampoo.  This is brilliant for more intense cleansing or to remove any unwanted build-up of products at 1:5.

For those that require extra whitening to feet, legs, etc use Plush Puppy Wonder Blok. Plush Puppy Wonder Blok – this product is one of our proudest achievements in helping to maintain a white stain-free coat. It is not a bleach and contains no harmful chemicals but with the use of modern technology and high amounts of naturally sourced vegetable surfactants and glycerin. This product is designed to gently remove unwanted warm/red tones to the coat. Best used on a damp/wet coat. Gently rub into the areas required to allow time (5-10 minutes) and rinse. For maximum effects repeat or allow a longer time for this amazing product to work. As with all products take care around eyes. For maximum effect try applying the day prior to bath day. Apply and simply leave on until the next day bathing.

For Ruff and Brokens use  Plush Puppy Texture + Shampoo is another product that can be used after the whitening shampoo. Formulated using the latest technology to retain and improve coat texture. Recommended to thoroughly yet gently cleanse and deodorise the coat of Terriers with harsh or coarse coat without softening or compromising texture. It is ideal for boosting body and coarseness in coats. Formulated to be pH controlled, creates/ maintains texture, easy to rinse out and low irritant with a subtle apple fragrance. Incorporates Gentian Root Extract, Juniper Fruit Extract, St John’s Wort Leaf Extract, Norway Spruce Leaf Extract, Hayflower Extract, Lemon Balm Leaf Extract, Arnica Flower Extract. Use at undiluted directly to areas or apply 1:10. Rinse thoroughly. This can also be used on smooth coat types as it will reduce the “fluffiness” and leave the coat tighter and flatter.

Do not use a conditioner. This will increase softness and not what these coats need. If you feel the coat needs hydration, use  Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil ½ to 1 teaspoon to a 2 L (1/2 gallon) of water (depending on the individual dog and coat stage), apply liberally and work through the coat and leave in. This is a water-soluble oil and is not greasy – it just adds all the goodness of Evening Primrose Oil, Calendula Oil, etc that sometimes is required to bring the coat up to a healthy vigour for the discerning show person.

For furnishings care use Plush Puppy Reviva Coat mid-week on the legs, face to protect. This is a great moisturiser to use without overly softening the coat. Hard to find things that will do just that. It is the perfect product for after-show bathing out of the furnishings to protect and moisturise.

Adding more texture Plush Puppy Powder Puff Terrier. It does clean and it does deodorise, and it does leave the coat like barbed wire. You will have texture like no harsh texture you have ever seen before. It has a faint odour of mandarin & ginger without being flowery or artificial or obvious and is applied by sprinkling onto the coat or applied with a brush or hands and worked in well. It’s that easy. Just keep brushing or better still, blow dry to remove excess and you will have a clean dog with an amazing coat. Perfect for use before assisting in hand stripping and carding.

On show day apply Plush Puppy Cover Up Cream is a great cover for stains or discoloration. Excellent on “red” area on worn elbows and to the white on the muzzle.  When you really need to cover stains your whites or intensify white areas. Apply with a barely damp sponge using a small amount. Build up coverage as required layer by layer. Add a tiny bit of Plush Puppy Chalkestral with your fingertips to the legs and face prior to applying the white powder or chalk as required whilst cream is drying. Brush off the excess when dry. You need something to help grip and to protect the coat from abrasion. Best of all is Plush Puppy Fairy Frosta better & innovative approach to the usual methods of white chalking/adding powder to coats. Clings well and doesn’t clump, it’s fine & easy to use. Adds a crisp white tone and cover to all coats without creating harshness. The whitest, brightest powder around. Clings – all day. A little goes a long way. Naturally sourced – no chalk or talc.
